MT PLEASANT AIKIDO
Mt Pleasant Aikido was established in 1976 by Dr. Clyde Takeguchi, 7th dan. Sensei (teacher) Takeguchi is currently Chief Instructor of Capital Aikikai in Washington, D.C.
Mt Pleasant Aikido is a member Dojo of the United States Aikido Federation, Eastern Region under the supervision of Yoshimitsu Yamada, 8th dan, a direct student of O'Sensei. Mt Pleasant Aikido exists solely for the teaching and promotion of Aikido. All dues and fees collected are used for the benefit of its members -- to maintain current associations and certifications and to enhance its teaching program. A weekend seminar featuring a high ranking guest instructor is held once or twice a year. Rank testing follows the requirements outlined by the United States Aikido Federation.
AIKIDO PRACTICE - WHAT TO EXPECT
The format of practice in the Mt Pleasant Aikido dojo is essentially the same as that used in most Aikido dojo around the world. Training stresses correct etiquette, proper movement, basic techniques and ukemi (tumbling skills). Each student learns at a different pace; the instructor and students will show concern and respect for the progress of all students. Classes usually begin with warm up and stretching exercises, followed by traditional aiki taiso exercises which develop the body movements basic to Aikido techniques. The majority of each class is spent practicing basic techniques and/or tumbling drills. Class will often end with kokyu (breath power) techniques or breathing/meditation exercises. All students are expected to practice in a safe and controlled manner.
